After the brief tour in the Little India quarter of Singapore, I ventured to Geylang Serai. This is one of the areas of Singapore that has resisted (so far) the effects of urban projects and the resulting gentrification. I am unsure of the exact origin, but the name of Geylang Serai arises from cultivation of coconut and lemongrass in the area.
