Lighting firecrackers arises from a popular myth that a dreadful monster used to terrorize ancient Chinese villages, until one man discovered that the monster was terrified of loud noises. Singapore has however, banned firecrackers or at least those let off by individuals - uncontrolled explosions going off in a nation that is often jostling for space, could be asking for trouble. There are professional pyrotechnic companies that put up a good show. Furthermore, red is believed to be an auspicious colour, so virtually everything is in shades of red.... or yellow/gold.
