photoblog image Barcelona: Gaudi

Barcelona: Gaudi

Antoni Gaudí is another name that comes up a lot when one looks up Barcelon. He was a local Spanish architect and one of the best known names in Catalan Modernism. Gaudí's works are mostly located in Barcelona (the church of the Sagrada Família, seen above, is a still ongoing work, despite Gaudi's death in 1926) and were heavily influenced by nature. He pursued great details in not only his architecture, but also ceramics, stained glass, wrought iron and carpentry.

Jolie photo. C'est un style vraiment particulier.
Ayush Basu: I am pleased you like it, Martine.
Fascinating stuff, Ayush!
Ayush Basu: I was impressed by the contributions of Gaudi, Elizabeth.
Look at all those cranes! I have been to this Sagrada Familia twice now, Ayush, and think it will always be a work in progress. I was so taken by his art/architecture all over Barcelona that I ended up buying a chess set in his style, on prominent display in our living space. You may even remember it?
Ayush Basu: He has an impressive body of work, Ginnie, and this is such an awe inspiring structure. I do not remember this chess set you mention, but then again my memory is not that sharp tongue

This is a fabulous picture, Ayush. Seldom you get to see this. WOW.
Did you go inside too?
Ayush Basu: Yes, I do have some shots from the interior, although it was really crowded and I felt a bit anxious at times. But it is certainly an awe inspiring structure, Astrid.

I do believe that it was built without planning consent and the beaurocrats were considering if it should be pulled down but I think common sense prevailed. What greta view it would be from he cranedriver's seat.
Ayush Basu: No shortage of dumb folks all around, I see. I agree about the view from up there, Alan.
I am sure I saw somewhere that it is finally nearly finished!
Ayush Basu: We were told it is due to complete in 2026, Bill.

This is a superb work of art and I a. So pleased that they have managed to complete Guadi’s great work. I saw masons carving stone in the cathedral some twenty years ago and it felt like a living scene from the sixteenth century.
Ayush Basu: At the time of my visit, I saw some spires (that had been cast elsewhere) coming in on flatbed trucks and being lifted away for storage, Chad. All without disturbing the endless throngs of ticketed visitors.
I've read somewhere that in general nobody has any idea when this building will actually be finished.
Ayush Basu: Gaudi died in 1926 and apparently the plan is to complete the Sagrada by 2026, Brian. We will see.

Still being built - ongoing from since before 1926! Wow! That is probably something for the record books and the cost must be enormous. I like this picture of towers and cranes - everything is still up in the air.

Never ending adventure!
Ayush Basu: This place is going to see a lot more action till 2026, Anne.
wow! i've never seen buildings like that... i imagine he was a visionary! Great shot of it, Ayush!
Ayush Basu: He had a clear and level headed approach towards his work, Elaine. Thank you kindly for the praise.
The pity is that Gaudi's design was not completed, and the architect who took over was no where near so talented - one can see the differences quite readily.
Ayush Basu: I was fascinated by his dedication and approach to his work, Tom. It was indicated that at the time of his death, he was in his seventies and he had moved into accommodation pretty much right on this site.

Ayush Basu: It is several decades of work, Sherri.
Architectural cranes... Nice shot Ayush.
