photoblog image Barcelona Bird

Barcelona Bird

This is a notable member of one of the non-native species of parrot that resides at the Park Güell. The good thing was that this bird had found something munch-worthy on a low hanging branch. I was able to squeeze off several shots and then was progressively trying to inch closer and closer – the bird was probably quite used to humans being around as it displayed no signs of alarm.

Not the Norwegen Blue, then, Ayush!
Ayush Basu: Although I like the prospect of 'shooting' an occasional bird, I am quite poor at identifying them, Ray.

It probably saw you and thought you a decent chap who would do it no harm. Love the colour Ayush.
Ayush Basu: Well, I did 'shoot' it, Chad.
I think it is having avocado for lunch. Lovely photo.
Ayush Basu: I am pleased you like it, Mary.
Good close-up Ayush.
Ayush Basu: I wish I had the focus on the eye, Brian.
He was probably hoping you would give him some food Ayush
Ayush Basu: That would win him over, Bill.
The first parrots I saw were in Barcelona - quite a few years ago.
Ayush Basu: I am not knowledgeable on the subject of birds but I always like their calls and songs, no matter which place I visit, Tom.

He looks a happy chappy smile
Ayush Basu: He was well fed as I could see, CP.
The park's own domesticated paraot! I like the idea, Ayush, and your delightful capture of it.
Ayush Basu: He had no shortage of food, as I could tell, Ginnie.

That is quite amazing, Ayush. A great portrait of this bird and I think it was fun to take pictures and just take one step closer each time. Did it fly away in the end?
Ayush Basu: I wish I had the focus on the eye, Astrid. I did not realize it on the camera then. No, it was still there, he wanted no leftovers remaining behind smile

A cracking image with some fine detail in its plumage. E's certainly not shuffled off 'is mortal coil or pinnin' for the fjords.
Ayush Basu: And that made me realize that the focus on its eye is a bit soft, Alan.
what a beautiful baby!! i'm glad you got so close!
Ayush Basu: He was really into his food, Elaine.
He's still keeping an eye on you, Ayush. Lovely looking bird with feathers that match the branch.
Ayush Basu: Yes, I liked the nearly packed feathers, Beverly.

First of all, your technique of moving nearer, while shooting is a very good one. Second, you must focus on the eye - that is about the no 1 rule of bird photography. On manual focus, focus on the eye and then re-compose if you want to. Some lenses can do that in auto focus. Because most birds are restless, just autofocus on the eye and shoot with the bird smaller than the frame - you can always crop to a better composition if you want to.

Third, this looks somewhat like our brown-headed parrot, but is not one.
Ayush Basu: You are absolutely right, Louis. For some reason, I neglected to check that the focus was in fact, not on the eye. That makes it all the more a pity because this bird did not fly away and I was not pressed for time. I appreciate your advice. And I certainly need to do a better job the next time!
