Good Friends

This 1980 sculpture of a boy squatting with a duck is by Henri (Han) Wezelaar and stands in the Parade area of Venlo town. There is a row of buildings on the opposite, and with the tilt in his head, it may appear from the upstair windows that the little fellow has a perpetual peep.

There is much to like here, Ayush.

Is that you green bike with the pink mud-guard?
Ayush Basu: No, I was parked elsewhere, Ray. In Venlo town center, there are a lot of bikes and they tend to get into scenes everywhere.
J'aime cet enfant et son canard.
Ayush Basu: I am pleased you do, Martine.

Boy with duck, very interesting isn't it..
Ayush Basu: A sign of harmony in my opinion, Chris.
You have found some delightful sculptures on your travels Ayush
Ayush Basu: I can better relate to such artworks when compared to stylized and abstract versions, where one can make out no head or tail, Bill.

a nice sculpture - and look at the bikes- wij zijn in Nederland!
Ayush Basu: Danke schon, Philine. Indeed the bikes are difficult to get rid of when taking photos.
There sems to be quite a lot of these style of sculptures around the streets.
Ayush Basu: I can better relate to such artworks when compared to stylized and abstract versions, where one can make out no head or tail, Brian.

I like this so much, Ayush. A great series with the sculptures. I will ask the parents of my daughter-in-law if they are familiar with the statues, they lived for a long time in Venlo and go back there very often.
Ayush Basu: A sign of harmony in my opinion, Astrid. I am sure they would have seen this one, as it is in a prominent part of the town street (parade area) and the three of us walked together.
I raised ducks when my children were young. This reminds me of that time very much.
Ayush Basu: I hope you had happy memories of that period, Mary.
A very sweet tribute to good freinds!
Ayush Basu: You are right! A sign of harmony in my opinion, Elizabeth.

I think all children when they re young should have experiences with animals. We never had ducks, though, when I was young; we just had cats. I would not fancy going far on either of those bikes.
Ayush Basu: I agree with you, Alan - we need to build a feel for harmony with other creatures we share this planet with.
Not the choice if you want to do a hundred plus kilometers in a day!
I guess the sculptor was trying to freak out the people in the upstairs windows. smile
Ayush Basu: Haha, could be, especially at late night hours, Sudipto.

Have you counted how many statues in Venlo, Ayush?
Ayush Basu: Oh there are far many more than I could count, Lisl. The ones I show are mostly in the town center area.
How sweet, Ayush. That tilt of the head makes him even more special.
Ayush Basu: Yes, I agree, Ginnie. Makes me feel there is a third element in addition to the boy and the duck.
what a sweeeet statue!! i once had a duck in my lap, and it tried to peck out my eye haha
Ayush Basu: Thank you very much! That was perhaps a surprise, Elaine.

As far as I can see, the young man is naked. I don't think he is a peep, but I think others are peeping at him.
Ayush Basu: I can better relate to such artworks when compared to stylized and abstract versions, where one can make out no head or tail, Louis. Yes, passersby may indeed do a double take on him.
Très sympa cette sculpture, et j'aime bien avec les vélos.
Bonne soirée Ayush
Ayush Basu: I am pleased with your response, Pascale. I did not have too many options here.
i like it Ayush....petersmile
Ayush Basu: The sculptor did the magic, Peter.

the bicycles surrounding this statue are a wonderful element
Ayush Basu: There are usually quite a few of them in the town center and around the trains station, Sherri.

This one is really cute.
Ayush Basu: I felt it depicted a healthy, harmonious relation, CherryPie.
A protective pose with the duck, Ayush. Do people just leave their bikes without locking them?
Ayush Basu: Oh bikes are well locked, Beverly. There is a high rate of bike theft in the Netherlands, especially in university towns as I am told.
