Crazy Monday

2007 saw the installation of five statues by Mieke Knaapen, adorning the rim of a fountain bowl, in Velden (a village 6km north of Venlo). I thought I also had a shot showing all of them but I was mistaken. The figures represent youthful locals dressed up unusually - jacket turned inside out, handkerchief around the head simulating a beard, curtain draped as a cloak. As I found out, January 20 marked San Sebastian Day. Festivities were organized that were open to married men or single men above 30. Therefore single men in the range of 16 to 30 ambled around the streets dressed as such in a mark of protest. The first Monday after San Sebastian Day is called Crazy Monday.

What a way to protest and what great sculptures these are. I have to say that you really biked around near Venlo and did a lot of research, Ayush. Love it.
Ayush Basu: This is a good way to really gain understanding for a place - explore on bike, see new things and when there are questions, look it on the internet, Astrid!
Well then. Protests have always been alive and well, Ayush. smile
Ayush Basu: With a bit of humour and cheeky-ness, Ginnie grin

Sculptures are made for various reasons. The one reason that applies to all sculptures, is that the sculptor needs to make a living. In the Netherlands, the arts are co-sponsored by government. That means that an artist don't necessary have to work for the buying market, or wait for specific assignments. It leaves more freedom of expression.

Some use art to comment on society, which I think is the case here. A comment on San Sebastian day and Crazy Monday.
Ayush Basu: I agree about the state support for the arts in the Netherlands. I am pleased to have come across this sculpture, Louis. And you are right, a reflection on the society of a certain period of time makes it more interesting for me.
I'm glad you explained! I do like the expressions, and your composition, from this angle, is excellent to generate intrigue!
Ayush Basu: I did not know this when I took the picture, but only much later when I looked it up online, Elizabeth.
