Leong San Tong Khoo Kongsi - 3

This temple complex was the site of widespread secret society wars known as the Penang Riots in the 1860s. This clan temple was built in 1906, after the original was burnt down in 1894, allegedly struck by lightning. The Chinese believed that it was due to its “over-perfection” and resemblance to the Emperor's palace. A toned-down version was later built, which still boasts of magnificent embellishments and intricate carvings, creations of master craftsmen from China.

It is superb, Ayush.
Ayush Basu: It left me suitably impressed, Ray.
A gorgeous construction.
Ayush Basu: It is a thing of much beauty, Michael.
This was certainly elaborate enough! A lovely photo!

I have never addressed the concept of over-perfection before Ayush
Ayush Basu: People do come up with creative explanations to support their beliefs, Chris.
If this is "toned-down," Ayush, I can't imagine what the original must have been like!
Ayush Basu: I am with you on this, Ginnie. But since that happened centuries ago, I am not sure if there are any records of how it actually did look then.

wow, i thought secret societies were a European thing... very interesting story to go with this amazing picture, Ayush!
Ayush Basu: I am pleased you like this, Elaine.
Oh yes, a lot of single, young and practically penniless men immigrating to a place with thriving commercial contracts and clan based division lines, you got yourself some kind of organized crime groups in the making.

The stripey look Ayush.
Ayush Basu: Going with the times, I imagine, Chad.
Clearly it was not a good idea to try and outdo the Emperor
Ayush Basu: That is what the people of those times would have told you emphatically, Bill.
Strange religious/political disturbances run deep.
Ayush Basu: A lot of single, young and practically penniless men immigrating to a place with thriving commercial contracts and clan based division lines, you got yourself some kind of organized crime groups in the making. It is just that this temple was occupying a spot in the center of things, Mary.
Whatever its history it is a fine looking building.
Ayush Basu: It left me suitably impressed, Brian.
Perfectly composed, Ayush! The man sitting over there makes for a nice touch too... smile
Ayush Basu: He was the security personnel, waiting to close the premises at the end of the day.
Wow! What a place, Ayush. Quite remarkable.
Ayush Basu: It left me suitably impressed, Frank.

These temples are so photogenic, Ayush. What a great architecture.
Ayush Basu: It is worth visiting several times because in my opinion, the first visit may lead to an overload of the senses, Astrid.
Hard to believe this is "toned down"... smile
Ayush Basu: People do come up with creative explanations to support their beliefs, Larry.
Que c'est beau !!! Bravo pour cette reconstruction !
Bonne journée
Ayush Basu: Merci, Claudine. Have a good weekend.

R+This is extremely elaborate, especially the detail on the roofs.
Ayush Basu: Precisely, Alan. And it makes for some good amount of time standing outside.

It is as if someone glued together hundreds of toys, to decorate the roof.
Ayush Basu: Chinese temple roofs will always have something going on up there, Louis. They represent warriors and protectors, basically to inspire a feel of safety, security and strength.
This is gorgeous... it is the creation of master craftsmen Ayush... the top above the entrance looks very much like a grand ship....petersmile
Ayush Basu: It left me suitably impressed, Peter. And you are right, the craftsmen to do this kind of work are today in few numbers.
Did the haze return again?
Ayush Basu: Not yet, LC.
