Sint Anthoniusmolen, Kessel - At Rest

The current mill was built in 1800 (the main timbre column bears an inscription to that effect) in nearby Meijel . There was already a mill there and to avoid competition, it was sold to Lodewijk Pennings of Kessel and since 1878, it has occupied this location on the Roode Eggeweg. Toon Gastreich bought the mill in 1943 and had the mill repaired; he was also the one who christened the mill Sint Anthoniusmolen. During WWII, the mill was heavily damaged by German artillery from across the river Maas. The municipality of Kessel became the owner of the mill in 1955.

Joli moulin, on n'en voit pas de similaire chez moi.
Ayush Basu: This is a mill that can turn on its central vertical axis, so slightly different from the one I showed previously, Martine.

with all the history you've mentioned, i'm surprised there is anything left of it

nice capture
Ayush Basu: There is a good deal of effort to conserve it now, Sherri.

Is this an unusual design, Ayush?

Good that it's still with us Ayush, a pleasing shot
Ayush Basu: The wide angle lens helped a good deal here, Chris.
Il est très très beau ce moulin. Est-ce celui qu'on apercevait précédemment ?
Bonne journée Ayush
Ayush Basu: Yes, Pascale, this is the same one seen from the top of the church tower, but it is a post mill, so it is different from De Grauwe Beer that I showed some weeks ago. And a fine weekend to you.

That is a wonderful windmill, do you know if somebody lives in it?
Ayush Basu: This is a post mill, so slightly different from the one I showed previously, Astrid. Nobody stays here but vrijwilligers come on Wednesdays and Saturdays to mill grains.
What a lovely mill, we have post mills in the U.K., but they might not have such an interesting history as this one.
Ayush Basu: I have been to this part of the Netherlands since 2014, but it is only in recent months that I have truly begun to discover these gems, Brian.

i love the angle - you've captured the awe of the structure.
Ayush Basu: Thank you for that comment - I was all the way at the back of the fence and without this wide angle lens, could not have fit the whole thing in the frame. It would have been nicer if I have cropped out the twigs, Beth.
You captured it well, Ayush. A fine building with a practical purpose.
That 10 mm focal length gives it a nice relaxed look.
Ayush Basu: Thank you for that comment - I was at the back of the fence and without the 10mm, could not fit the whole thing in the frame. It would have been nicer if I have cropped out the twigs, Michael.
I've not seen a windmill like this before... pretty cool!
Ayush Basu: Actually this is an unusual mill to my eyes, because the whole of that structure can rotate about its central post, Elizabeth. Most other mills I saw were ones where the top portion only rotates.
Great windmill shot...
Ayush Basu: Thank you, Larry. It was a beautiful day too.

A nice looking windmill.
Ayush Basu: I am pleased you like it, CP - more to come!
