De Grauwe Beer 4

The millers all work on a voluntary basis. The guide explained to me how the rotation of the vanes is translated into a vertical gear, that drives a horizontal gear, which further drives two horizontal gears. Each of these gears is connected to a shaft, that in turn drives the grinding wheel over a stationary counterpart. A hopper at a side, allows the raw grains to enter into the wheels. After the grains are ground into flour (the consistency of which can be controlled by a mechanism of belts and strings), a chute takes the produce into bags, placed one floor below. Each 40 kilo bag is then lowered down by a pulley system through a trap door to waiting wagons for shipment.

I like your detailed explanation and the textures in the image...
Ayush Basu: Thank you, Larry.
Quite beautiful with the wonderful warm tones. Kind of beer tones.
Ayush Basu: I liked the illuminated wood too!

Terrifically atmospheric isn't it
Ayush Basu: I was pleased with this visit, Chris.
Merci pour les informations intéressantes et pour ces photos.
Bonne journée Ayush
Ayush Basu: I am pleased that you found it interesting, Pascale.
Sounds very complicated, Ayush.
Ayush Basu: Yes, there are several bits all over the place and I did not have a wide enough view to capture it all in one place, Beverley.

Un système très astucieux.
Ayush Basu: Oh I was certainly impressed, Martine.
Wonderful shots to go with your narrative, Ayush. I love the tones and markings of the wood!
Ayush Basu: I liked the illuminated wood too, Elizabeth!
The Dutch have this down to a science, Ayush, don't they. After all these years, I still want to watch these mills at work!
Ayush Basu: All optimized and streamlined to the maximum, Ginnie. I am rather impressed by them.

I am so glad Ayush that you took the tour through the windmill. Nothing beats the wood and the feel of a windmill. Great series so far smile
Ayush Basu: I will have some more coming up to keep you hooked, Astrid. It is a surprise that I am still discovering them in the vicinity.
my eye was trying to make sense of the pictures, then i read your commentary and see why i failed haha... neat shots!
Ayush Basu: Yes, there are several bits all over the place and I did not have a wide enough view to capture it all in one place, Elaine.

The place is geared up for working. I have visited some mills in the Netherlands and the one I remembers best is the one where we were served pancakes and coffee after the viewing - some place in Friesland.
Ayush Basu: I am based in the southern province of Limburg, Louis. And I will be featuring some more mills. I hope to be able to make a trip to Friesland but it will have to wait for the time being.

A fascinating insight Tom what was once a common occurrence.

It is always fascinating to see a mill in operation and learn about its workings.
