photoblog image Hock Teik Cheng Sin Temple - 3

Hock Teik Cheng Sin Temple - 3

The Hokkien Kongsi occupies part of the Hock Teik Cheng Sin Temple. Intricate artwork can be seen on the ceiling beams. Restoration work was carried out at the Hock Teik Cheng Sin. I found this general on the door who was not the fiercest of them all.

Today, this temple is symbolic of the values of the community and rituals are still conducted in a fashion very similar to what was practiced in the Fujian Province (from where most of them originated).

I like his stylish jade thumb-ring, Ayush!
Ayush Basu: I am not sure if it signifies anything, Ray.
Terrific detail, Ayush!
Ayush Basu: I am indeed amazed by the creators of these door panels, Elizabeth.

His fierceness has been tamed a little over the years from the look of him
Ayush Basu: He is just warning you not to make fun of his eye brows, Chris.

He has very large bright eyes Ayush.
Ayush Basu: I believe they are meant to signify all seeing eyes that do not let the minutest of details to escape, Chad.
He seems quite jovial really Ayush.
Ayush Basu: Just that his eye brows let him down a bit, Bill grin
I prefer to look at a less fierce face.
Ayush Basu: Would you prefer a face with eye brows more trim, Mary? grin
I can imagine young children are quite scared by these paintings.
Ayush Basu: I suppose they would be told that although stern, he will protect the premises of the temple from all evil, Brian.

The expression in the face of the image is rather severe!
Ayush Basu: He probably blames his unfortunate eye brows, CherryPie.
Very fierce looking.
Ayush Basu: I think it will be viewed a requisite in view of him being a guardian, Michael.
I like how the door ring/handle is also "displayed," Ayush.
Ayush Basu: It is not as ornate as some others that I have seen, Ginnie. And it is often also a feature of cathedral doors!

The details of this door are amazing and I think Chris has a point.
Ayush Basu: I think it will be viewed a requisite in view of him being a guardian, Astrid. I see what Chris meant.
Magnifique tout simplement !!
Merci pour cette série
Ayush Basu: Thank you for following the long Penang series, Claudine.

He certainly looks less fearsome, Ayush - even his frown looks to be in concentration rather than censure
Ayush Basu: Probably misplaced the keys to the inner chamber and now is a exerting his memory to recall, Lisl.

Hahah! He;'s trying to look fierce but is probably a big softie really. The detail is incredible.
Ayush Basu: Haha, I like your play on this, Alan! I do wonder how long the eyesight lasted of the artisans who created these.

well, it DOES look like he's trying to smile lol the picture of him is amazing!!
Ayush Basu: His eyebrows let him down, Elaine - apart from that, he is a dandy! tongue
I forgot the name of this sword he is holding...

Let me try and see if I can recall it.
Ayush Basu: Oh thank you, LC, if you can!
You wouldn't want to cross that guy!
Ayush Basu: With eyebrows and chin whiskers like that, certainly not, Tom!

He looks wonderful - what fantastic art.
Ayush Basu: I agree, Anne. I do wonder how long the eyesight lasted of the artisans who created these.

His hairs look very real!
Ayush Basu: Indication of a master artisan, I should say, Louis.
I found it!
It's a "bar mace".
Pronounced as "jian" in Chinese.
Ayush Basu: Ahha! Thank you, LC.
