photoblog image HK Day1: addiction

HK Day1: addiction

The multitudes of air-conditioning units reminded me of Singapore and growing number of other Asian megacities, where rising income levels are seen, how we are increasingly obsessed with artificial cooling. Staggering irony here; with the greenhouse emissions and the carbon dioxide that we pump out (not to mention the waste heat), we only contribute to more global warming.

I do not have any pictures here but I came across posters of symbolic one voluntary night without air conditioning. Named the “No Air Con Night”, 29th of September is the marked date for 2017. Hong Kong (and Singapore) has a rather heavy environmental footprint, in other indicators too, such as per capita consumption of water.

That is a very nice image and nicely written.
Ayush Basu: Thank you, Michael. I am pleased you like both.
Megacity indeed! I like the idea of a no air con night!
Ayush Basu: Me too, Elizabeth.

La taille des climatiseurs est impressionnante.
Ayush Basu: I had to capture this view, Martine.

Food for thought Ayush
Ayush Basu: And hopefully some action after that too, Chris.

I like the way your call this an addiction Ayush. I remember staying in hotels in warm countries without it and having a very uncomfortable night.
Ayush Basu: I can imagine your experience, Chad.

Interesting statistics, Ayush; and I had never considered that about air conditioning, not needing to be a user myself
Ayush Basu: I do not use one and I think my tolerance to being without it has improved in recent years, Lisl.
The same is true of cars. All of them have air conditioning these days!
Ayush Basu: Good point, Bill.

Aircon - without it, you possibly wouldn't be able to live in these high buildings, without the ability to open windows. Oh well, the one thing lead to the other.
Ayush Basu: Hmm, I wonder if some kind of grilles/bars/louvres would have worked better, Louis.

where we live, i believe that our electricity comes from water... so i don't think our footprint is that bad...
Ayush Basu: Hmm, good point, Elaine. I agree with you.
I don't know how people live in these places - they are like ant heaps!
Ayush Basu: They do expand vertically more than they do horizontally, Tom.

I understand your concern about this, Ayush. In fact, we went to some lengths to try to design our new house in such a way that we can live in it without the need of air-conditioning despite the extreme heat/humidity.

Sometimes it is a bit of a struggle, but it seems to work.

This fine shot represents my strong impression of HK from the couple of times I have worked there.
Ayush Basu: I do not use one and I think my tolerance to being without it has improved in recent years, Ray. I did not spend significant time there so I grabbed whatever images that caught my fancy.
that was very interesting Ayush... we don't use air-conditioning here... we have a lake breeze and 4 slow moving fans that use 5 amps of energy....petersmile
Ayush Basu: I rather like the fans, Peter. I have a pedestal fan and do not use the aircon unit at my place in Singapore.
Well named and seen...
Ayush Basu: Thank you, Larry.

The air conditioning units are also rather ugly to look at.
Ayush Basu: Ugly, noisy and walk past them to be greeted by a blast of hot gush, CP!
On Earth Day our citizens are urged to turn all electric consuming products off but it the only time we do such a thing.
