This temple complex was the site of widespread secret society wars known as the Penang Riots in the 1860s. This clan temple was built in 1906, after the original was burnt down in 1894, allegedly struck by lightning. The Chinese believed that it was due to its “over-perfection” and resemblance to the Emperor's palace. A toned-down version was later built, which still boasts of magnificent embellishments and intricate carvings, creations of master craftsmen from China.
