Batu Ferringhi Chinese Cemetery 1

Batu Ferringhi Chinese Cemetery is a hillside cemetery at one end of Batu Ferringhi (one of the more famous stretches of beach in Penang). The word Ferringhi refers to a person of Portuguese descent, but is not particular to the Malay language.

All very different to our western cemetries
Ayush Basu: You are quite right about that, Chris.

I would have loved to walk with you over this cemetery. This looks different and so beautiful. Love the background, so much to see.
Ayush Basu: Even to my eyes this is unusual, Astrid. There were similar cemeteries in Singapore too but due to land scarcity, they are very rare and the existing ones too are being exhumed.
This loks almost like some sort of trone.
Ayush Basu: It does indeed, Brian, I suppose with the inclusion both the parents and the elaborate structure.
It seems this must be for someone very important. Very nice, Ayush!
Ayush Basu: It seems all graves were of the same structure, Elizabeth.

Very interesting.
Ayush Basu: I am pleased you feel that way, Anne. Thank you very much.
I have been to Bukit Cina in Malacca.
There was one in Singapore too, Bukit Brown.
Ayush Basu: I have been to both, LC. There were similar cemeteries in Singapore too but due to land scarcity, they are very rare and the existing ones too are being exhumed.
this is a beautiful grave site for the man and woman Ayush... i see that it is well tended to with the incense pots and the flags that look like a dragon across the top....petersmile
Ayush Basu: Visit to the graves of ancestors is a sign of filial piety among the ethnic Chinese, Peter. I like your take on the flags.

It is very ornate and quite different to our cemeteries.
Ayush Basu: I agree, Alan. Thank you.
Looks like there are plenty of visitors.
Ayush Basu: Visit to the graves of ancestors is a sign of filial piety among the ethnic Chinese, Mary.
