Ayer Itam Market 2

The wet market itself is in a built up structure and sells all kinds of fresh vegetables, fruits meat, fish, seafood and spices. It is possible to buy live chicken and have them butchered. Outside, there are many possibilities to purchase apparel, shoes and homeware. Some of the most famous shops of Penang selling asam laksa are reputed to be located just outside the wet market. It was quite common to see a rack of severed pig's heads displayed at an arm's length from women's innerwear, which were in turn piled on a cart, next to one that sold kitchen utsensils.

The next time this character is out of the plastic crate, will be for the last time.

Great market shot, Ayush.
Ayush Basu: I am please you like it, Ray.
Awe - that makes me sad...
Ayush Basu: I know what you mean, Elizabeth.

The fate of a chicken... I think they might feel that their end is coming?? More fresh you cannot get. I assume they are for consumption, not for the eggs...
Ayush Basu: They were being selected, taken out, weighed and then... Every time the hatch was opened, they would all start squawking but they would stop once one was selected and lifted out, Astrid.

Je trouve cela horrible.
Ayush Basu: It is a potentially disturbing sight, I concede that, Martine.
This made me sad, too, Ayush, though the head poked through the hole does give some comic relief.
Ayush Basu: This is the way how things go here, Ginnie. Though there are the more modern and mechanised supermarkets that sell all washed and packed meat.
An honest market photograph.
Ayush Basu: I am glad you said that, Chad. In Singapore, the more modern and mechanized supermarkets that sell all washed and packed meat, give an impression of everything clinically cold and sterile. Furthermore there is a thought that the younger generations no longer know the origins of food on the table.

Sad in a way but good in another Ayush
Ayush Basu: I thought it was good that this is not too shielded visually, Chris. In Singapore, increasingly there is a thought that the younger generations no longer know the origins of food on the table.

I Googled "asam laksa", Ayush. Do you like it?
Ayush Basu: I did like it, Lisl but I am not overtly a fan of it. Thank you for taking the time and effort to look it up. There is a huge variety in food in Penang.
That is almost a bit too fresh Ayush
Ayush Basu: I can imagine that, Bill. I did consider whether or not to put these up, but eventually decided to put just a couple. smile

so, not a place for vegans then... unless they want a lot of pet chickens and have the money to buy them all.
Ayush Basu: Penang is a place that has a majority of ethnic Chinese and that should help you form an impression of food habits here, Elaine. smile Well...
You know your chicken is fresh this way and butchered chicken does not have to sit out in the heat.
Ayush Basu: As I saw it, the customers came, selected the bird, which was swiftly removed from the cage, butchered and the rest of the processing took place rapidly, Mary. Then the packed meat and money exchanged hands.
you can't get a fresher chicken than this Ayush.....petersmile
Ayush Basu: No doubt about that, Peter.
These boiler chickens are rubbish! Do they still sell kampung chickens? Try them they're better. smile
Ayush Basu: Yep, the food that comes on to our tables these days has hardly any resemblance to what it should be, LC.
A short and unhappy life!
Ayush Basu: That is indeed so, Tom. They have only one purpose.
It is too bad that they are imprisoned like that.
Ayush Basu: It is acceptable as long as most of the folks do not see it, Michael. But their case has been like this always - only the free ranging fowl has it slightly better.
