Clan Jetties of Pengkalan Weld 4

Technically, they are not living on land and therefore are apparently, not required to pay taxes. There are located not too far from the Penang ferry terminal, using which, one can cross over to mainland Malaysia. The residents have switched to other income modes as well: there are souvenir shops, ice cream joints and some of the houses are offering home-stays for a more immersive experience.

I like your artistic eye, Ayush.
Ayush Basu: Thank you very much for your generous comment, Ray. It would have attracted anybody's attention.
A nice abstract, Ayush.
Ayush Basu: I imagine it makes a calming ritual for some residents to come out early mornings, face the open waters and light some joss sticks with a serene frame of mind, Frank.
I like your point of view on this, Ayush! Interesting info!
Ayush Basu: Thank you for the remark, Elizabeth.

Interesting that these people are living twixt land and water Ayush, I suppose this makes them slightly different in their hybrid habitat. I like this image
Ayush Basu: And I would also imagine that they strive to hold on this specific lifestyle to the extent possible, Chris.

I have just caught up on this series, Ayush - most interesting
Ayush Basu: Thank you Lisl, for looking back.
I like the idea of not having to pay taxes!
Ayush Basu: Ditto, Bill! grin
Did you indulge in any of these delights Ayush?
Ayush Basu: Lighting joss sticks? No. But I would like to be exempt from taxes in Singapore grin

that sounds like a neat lifestyle... i used to live on a boat, it was a very cheap way to live that's for sure...

I knew some Americans who lived on a houseboat there and they paid no taxes. That has long fascinated me.
Ayush Basu: I wonder if they had a scare during the 2004 Asian tsunami which badly affected parts of nearby Indonesia.
Incensed?
Ayush Basu: Haha, nice one, Michael.
Nice compo, Ayush!
Ayush Basu: Thank you, Tom.
This part of Penang is badly polluted, sadly!
Ayush Basu: It could certainly be much cleaner, LC.
Are those incense sticks...?
Ayush Basu: Yes, Larry. Historically the Chinese held the sea in high regard (owing to the number of sailors and those crossing the seas) and I believe that practise of paying thanks and gratitude has lingered.
