Clan Jetties of Pengkalan Weld 1

There used to be several jetties around here (Lim Jetty, Chew Jetty, Tan Jetty, Lee Jetty, Mixed Clan Jetty, Yeoh Jetty). This waterfront Chinese society is home to houses on stilts of various Chinese clans.

Interesting Ayush, I didn't realise the Chinese are so clannish
Ayush Basu: The Chinese have a history of sailing and migrating for centuries, so they tend to bond and create diaspora, Chris.

The Chinese seem very adept at clans and extended families, Ayush.

That saddle has seen a lot of action Ayush.
Ayush Basu: All sorts of action, Chad.
It is certainly an interesting way to live.
Ayush Basu: A few more shots will document this remarkable place, Mary.
Looks rather tight.
Ayush Basu: These are not only the residents but also the flocks of tourists, Michael.
This looks an interesting place to visit Ayush
Ayush Basu: I will present some more shots and info on this remarkable place, Bill.
What an amazing place to live, then - isn't it! I didn't know about Chinese Clans.

Thanks for the write-up, I hope these clans get along with each other or are there fights among them (that you know of)
I think it can be very busy her too?.
Ayush Basu: Interesting question, Astrid. And indeed, about a century ago, this place was full of secret societies, initiations and gang wars. A lot of economic opportunities went to the more powerful clans, that included mining rights or trading zones and so on. An old example of "Business as usual".
I have a feeling they travel together, too, as clans, Ayush, since we often see groups of Chinese tourists while we're traveling ourselves...all of us with cameras. smile
Ayush Basu: You mean they are Shutterclanners? smile

I would image that there are very close knit families that live here. The girl is pleased to be appearing in one of your images.
Ayush Basu: I am not sure if that is indeed the case in today's times, but it was certainly the case about a century ago, Alan.
Oh I can't remember which is my favourite clan jetty.
Ayush Basu: I think both the ones that I visited were my favourites for different reasons, LC.
It all looks busy!
Ayush Basu: Residents and tourists make it so, Tom.

Ayush Basu: They are a whole bunch of tourists, visiting the jetty and also patronising the souvenir shops, Elaine.
I thought I lived closed to my neighbors...
Ayush Basu: Well.. they too.. and also close to tourists and other short term visitors.
