photoblog image Cut & Shave

Cut & Shave

No pomades, I think.

A shot from a nearby saloon. This place offers standard, nothing-fancy haircuts, helmed by decades experienced barbers. Additionally on offer are a standard hot towel shave and shampoo, followed by a vigorous thirty second scalp massage, which is one notch below a series of pummelling blows to the back of the skull and the neck. While customers wait, they read the morning papers and if they have visited the place regularly, then they chit-chat with each other. All that is seen in this image, including the floor tiling, is easily over two decades old.

Love it, Ayush.

One of the pleasures of Thailand is the Men's Barber establishments...the expected tip in Australia is as much as the haircut in Thailand.
Ayush Basu: In Singapore, these old styled barbershops manage to survive and also there are some retro styled ones that charge absurd amounts, Ray. I am pleased you like it.
What a great place, Ayush! Love the photo!
Ayush Basu: Thank you, Elizabeth. This was taken on one of the trips that I felt a bit more in the mood to document my neighbourhood.
Jolie photo mais ce n'est pas très moderne.
Ayush Basu: Modern it certainly is not, Martine. But the barber is most competent and knows what he is doing.
Looks like the shops I used to go to as a kid.
Ayush Basu: Ditto!

Did you have your air cut here, Ayush, and did you enjoy a scalp massage, too?
Ayush Basu: Not on this occasion but usually I visit one just like this, Lisl.

There is a sense that this place has been the same for decades Ayush. Nice to record it before it turns into a supermarket, or worse..
Ayush Basu: This was taken on one of the trips that I felt a bit more in the mood to document my neighbourhood. I am hopeful it will survive for some more time since this entire stretch was full of businesses really anchored in the community. A lot of people were around and they all seemed to know each other well, a lot of 'real' conversation, not messaging/texting!
I hope such a place as this never goes out of style, Ayush. What a shame that would be!

All very traditional, I'm pleased to see. I bet the papers available are probably are from a different era, too!
Ayush Basu: Papers by default are almost from a different era, Alan... fighting online subscriptions and so on.
Barber's shops like this have become increasingly rare although one has recently opened near us with a "retro" look!
Ayush Basu: Oh here too, Bill, and when you hear of their prices, it will probably make you want to sandpaper your hair down to the scalp yourself.
This looks like the quiet time of day Ayush, or has he scared them all away.
Ayush Basu: It was a Sunday about 9am ish, Chad. I got the feeling that this place was rooted in the community, there would definitely be the regulars coming in.
i went into a barber shop once to get my hair cut and they turned me away coz only men were allowed... i didn't think that sexism was allowed!!
Ayush Basu: Well they lost the business opportunity that you were bringing... perhaps they had some other reasons, Elaine?
I bet you get a great haircut too.
Ayush Basu: I did not get one on this occasion but I normally visit a barbershop just like this- no frills but the barber is competent to say the least, Mary.
Nice to see this still around. Did you try the barber experience while there?
Ayush Basu: I did not get one on this occasion but I normally visit a barbershop just like this, Jacquelyn.

This is a great picture. LOVE those blue lamps near the mirror. Why do I have the impression that 'everybody' looks the same after a haircut here???
I hope I do not offend anybody....
Ayush Basu: Haha, clever point... but i guess not, these days men have a fair bit of vanity too so i am pretty sure they would want something like a 'fancy' hair cut...
I've never fancied being shaved by anybody else.
Ayush Basu: I am with you on the shave part, Brian. I would look absurd if I tried to do my own hair cut...

A lot of history there -- i feel like that place really does tell a story. Very nice capture.
Ayush Basu: I am happy to hear that Emily, I am myself not a big story teller, so I am pleased if the photo did that. But it also means that you are that much perceptive.
Surprenante photo ..j'adore !!
Ayush Basu: Thank you, Claudine. I am pleased with your response.
the old ways Ayush... it could use a few more clients... our barber in town moved to a bigger city... now i have to go to hairdressers... there are no shaves there....petersmile
Ayush Basu: I am hopeful that there would be more on their way, Peter. At the time of this shot, it was around 9am of a Sunday morning.
Oh I think there are still plenty of this barber in Malaysia...
Ayush Basu: Oh yes, I got a haircut from one of them at 6MYR!
Reminds me of my barber shop... I guess some things are universal. smile
Ayush Basu: I would like to think that is indeed the case, Larry.
