Grand Palace, Bangkok

King Bhumibol of Thailand passed away on October 13 at the age of 88 and the news of the demise of the much loved monarch plunged the nation of almost 70 million in grief and mourning. Focussing on rural development, he was the single constant factor in the decades that saw several coups.

He had a very impressive home, Ayush. R.I.P.
Ayush Basu: I am not too sure if the king indeed resided here but it did function as the official residence in the past, Frank. Impressive is fitting.

Very nicely composed, Ayush.
Ayush Basu: Thank you Ray, I like the upturned rafters and the spires.
A beautiful shot of an amazing palace. Ayush.
Ayush Basu: It sure was an impressive display, Elizabeth. Thank you.

C'est magnifique avec toutes ces dorures.
Ayush Basu: Precisely, Martine. I feel the same way.

yes, that's what we all need, a benevolent dictator... sad that he died... amazing picture
Ayush Basu: Well, Thailand has been for the greater part a parliamentary democracy, so the King was not really a dictator in that sense. He was benevolent indeed. Thank you, Elaine.
That is anmazing.
Ayush Basu: It certainly warrants spending several hours in this place, Michael.

I remember him from decades ago. Is this one of his houses?
Ayush Basu: Not his residence but I believe it was the official palace for the past kings of Siam, Chris.
I remember it at the time and was surprised Ray hadn't mentioned it. I love that gold spirit house.
Ayush Basu: It had been a rainy day on the morning of our visit and the diffused reflection made the gold tones pop out more, I suppose. Thank you, Mary.
A beautiful home isn't it. I'm sure Ray will have seen how the Thai people dealt with their Kings death.
Ayush Basu: It is indeed spectacular, Brian.
Ray has indeed presented in much more detail how Thais deal with death.
It seems his successor is not as popular
Ayush Basu: The predecessor had tirelessly toured the country to understand the issues affecting the Thai masses and worked for their upliftment. Definitely large shoes to be filled, Bill. And the successor has not taken that many steps towards to benefit of the Thais, at least what I understand from the media.

Sad news...
Despite the news your photo is lovely smile
Ayush Basu: This shot had been in my archives for a while and going through it, I stumbled across it, CP. Thank you for the compliment. The lighting diffused by the clouds helped tremendously.
Oh I miss Thailand so much!
Used to go there so often when I was little.
Ayush Basu: I have barely seen much of Thailand, LC!
this is a magnificent palace Ayush...
it is wonderful that 70 million people mourned his passing... we seldom see this happen with today's populations....petersmile
Ayush Basu: Precisely, Peter. The longer royalties and politicians hang around, the more they are loathed by the public - my observation.
I recall visiting it many years ago - our guide, a fellow student of my wife's, had grown up in the palace. Her mother was a lady in waiting to then queen and the king who has just died was the crown prince and Katalee's playmate.
Ayush Basu: That is indeed a unique guide, Tom - someone who not only knows the inner mechanisms but has his/her own takes and personal anecdotes.
