Gold medallist Shamshudin of Malaysia lay claim to a gold with an impressive throw of 54.25m. Somewhat disconcerting to see athletes toss around prodigious weights without looking.

You need to wear a hard-hat whilst photographing the field events, Ayush! smile
Ayush Basu: My following strategy has so far worked: (1) check with the competition manager where and where not I am permitted to step on to, (2) eye ball my surroundings to make sure I do not get flattened/impaled by a projectile/player and (3) get out once I have my shot. So far, so good, Ray!
You have to use your telephoto lens and be covered overhead to be safe Ayush. I like the netting background too.
Ayush Basu: My previous post was shot through the loops of that net, Jacquelyn, which was the reason how I was able to get close to the athletes. Generally, competition managers guide about the field of play (out of bounds area), but personal (and equipment) safety is largely up to the common sense and agility of the photographers.
That is another terrific action shot.
Ayush Basu: This was a terrific event, Michael. All I had to do was point and shoot.

Ayush Basu: Thank you for the visit and the remark, Martine.
Yikes! Good one!
Ayush Basu: Did this shot refresh memories of discus, Elizabeth? grin Thank you.

Good job the netting is there in case it all goes wrong. Good time to capture the athlete in mid-air.
Ayush Basu: In principle, that is the safest zone behind the net, Alan. Thank you.

All in the training - mind you you would have been at risk from my javelin throwing at school even if you stood behind me!
Ayush Basu: That would be two of us then! grin
I can see what you mean. Looks a bit scary.
Ayush Basu: A few more shots to follow from this event, Mary.
He is really launching himself into the throw. Great shot Ayush
Ayush Basu: I thought he had a slightly different form of release compared to the others, Bill. Thank you.
cool shot. It's all about technique I guess....
Ayush Basu: Thank you, Rob. I would know absolutely nothing of the technique here tongue
An awkward dance.
Ayush Basu: But effective I guess since he did manage to toss it that far, Michael.
When I watch the discus throw at Olympic games, Ayush, I am always thankful for the surrounding nets...and wonder how after all that twisting and turning they know when to exactly release the disc! Another fabulous action shot.
Ayush Basu: I agree completely, Ginnie. I guess just like other sports, these athletes have done this a thousand times over and over. But yes, I kept my eyes open ALL the time I was on/around the pitch.

You were picking up some excellent action shots, like this one.
Ayush Basu: Very kind of you, Louis. As a photographer, it was a special opportunity for me. As for the sport itself, I am not wiser than before grin
He looks like he is ascending...
Ayush Basu: Nice take on his posture, Larry.
Great action shot, Ayush!
Ayush Basu: Thank you, Tom.
So elegant.
Ayush Basu: I told you there are athletes from Malaysia, didn't I?smile
