photoblog image De Wiekeneer

De Wiekeneer

Seen in the old city of Maastricht, this is a resident of this district  of Wyck or Wiek, on Wycker Brugstraat (left). It greets people coming from the railway station and heading towards the bridge. This bronze statue is a well known symbol of Wyck. The couple at the rear were probably trying to get their bearings right using a phone and a guide book.

The statue looks lost too Ayush!
Ayush Basu: Yes, he may not be going somewhere any time soon, Chris
It must be windy as he is holding onto his hat
Ayush Basu: Agree with your hypothesis, Bill
He seems to be holding himself together very well Ayush.
Ayush Basu: He is not easily moved, Janet.
I don't understand the sliced legs and body.
Ayush Basu: I don't either, Mary. But nevertheless an interesting sculpture in my opinion

I think he needed another slice at the neck, Ayush.
Ayush Basu: Good point, Ray. I wonder if he would appreciate looking into binoculars and seeing an axe swinging towards him.
I always think it is fun to see these sort of things in a street.
Ayush Basu: I agree, Brian. some of them are very interesting indeed.
I like the balance of this shot with the long street views on both sides. The cut slices of the statue is interesting too.
Ayush Basu: Thank you for that comment, Jacquelyn

I like the way it is offset...
Ayush Basu: Innovative idea, isn't it, Larry
i like the sculpture of the man in the big hat Ayush... but i love corners like this where the street corner is in a Y and the fist building comes out at an angle on both streets....petersmile
Ayush Basu: I like that building too, Peter. Thank you for the comment
