photoblog image The Chicken Thief

The Chicken Thief

The statue at this fountain is based on the story of a chicken thief, who in the dark of night, stole a rooster instead. Showing a clean pair of heels, he was shocked and eventually caught as the supposed chicken crowed loudly.

This 1913 work by Hermann Joachim Pagels was not destroyed in the wars, which is a good thing since a lot of damaged statues were not recast or repaired.

That seems like an excellent event to be immortalised in a lovely fountain, Ayush.
Ayush Basu: Makes for a quirky statue, Ray. I liked it a lot.
Bit of a cock up there then, Ayush...smile
Ayush Basu: You bet! Thank you, Frank
As for chicken thief I had a great uncle who spent time for steeling chicken.
I came over from Cherie place if you find the time stop in.
Ayush Basu: Welcome, Dora. And I will definitely drop by your site.
What a story! Fine capture Ayush.
Ayush Basu: Thank you very much, Richard

Well thank heaven this magnificent example survived Ayush
Ayush Basu: I concur, Chris. On some instances, I read that residents themselves pulled down statues and melted them to fabricate arms and ammunition.
YAY for all the statues that were never lost to the wars!!!
Ayush Basu: Exactly, Ginnie!

Sounds like "fowl" play to me. It's a fine fountain but it would look even better if there was some water in it.
Ayush Basu: smile
Yes, now that you mention it, this shot was taken in March (rather cold still then, but not enough to freeze water). I wonder why...

To make a sculpture representing the chicken thief... A famous thief, wonder if the roasted the thief instead of the chicken
Ayush Basu: Very clever comment, Astrid. I am sure the thief was the subject of much ridicule!
I think it is funny that a statue was built to honour this story . Very interesting!
Ayush Basu: Very interesting indeed, Mary. A small incident becomes immortalized and perhaps embellished along the way.
What a fascinating story.
Ayush Basu: I am pleased you like it, Brian

What a claim to fame!

He must have been a very respected thief to have had a statue made smile
Ayush Basu: He was probably ridiculed to no end, Anne smile
he wasn't a very good chicken thief Ayush... i like the 102 year old sculpture....petersmile
Ayush Basu: He was no good really, Peter grin
I wonder what would his reaction be if he was resurrected and saw the broiler industry today
Great story and goo to see not everything was destroyed in two wars
Ayush Basu: Yes, Bill. I felt the same way
A nice folk memory to record!
Ayush Basu: Yes, I think it has now been imprinted indelibly in the collective memory of Oochers (Aacheners).
All wars are a crimes against humanity.
Ayush Basu: I have to agree with you, Michael
