Blacksmith

This statue is a tribute to the industrial past of Aachen, Germany. Not much is known about the model of this 1909 statue by Carl Burger. It is to be found on Jakobstrasse. The statue shows a larger than life blacksmith in apron with a large hammer in his right hand, resting on the pedestal. He has substantial musculature and looks over to the left. 175+ years old railway rolling stock manufacturer, Talbot/ Bombardier was pulling out of Aachen few years ago and apparently, this statue was chosen to represent those who opposed the move.

I had another photo of it from the front but for some reason cannot retrieve it.

He certainly looks like he can handle that hammer.
Ayush Basu: I have not the slightest doubt, Michael.
He lloks like a strong man Ayush! gGeat capture.
Ayush Basu: I am sure he would have been pretty effective at his job, Richard. Thank you
i like the composition from this point of view Ayush... it shows the size of the muscles in his arms and legs of the Blacksmith....petersmile
Ayush Basu: Thank you, Peter, for seeking out those observations.

It seems to be a wonderful piece of public art Ayush
Ayush Basu: I agree, Chris.
It stands as a symbol to a great industrial heritage
Ayush Basu: Yes, overlooking the street and the buildings nearby, Bill.

There is a Bombardier facty in the Engalnd making railway rolling stock. I like the flower holders in the street.
Ayush Basu: In Derby, I think.
Thank you for that observation, Alan.

Looks like a very powerful statue. A blacksmith is a hard trade, but the German steel is the best in the world...
Ayush Basu: They do know their various grades of steel, Astrid. Aachen is right in the historically important area of Nord Rhine Westphalia.
The tradesmen were the foundation of old Germany Ayush.
Ayush Basu: Quite right you are, Chad.
I like monuments to the ordinary man... it's on their backs that the modern world has been built!
Ayush Basu: I appreciate your sentiments, Elizabeth.
I wouldn't want to have to resist him in a fight, Ayush!
Ayush Basu: Same here, Ginnie. I wouldn't provoke him.
Perhaps it is Thor/Donar??
Ayush Basu: The Donar moniker was not known to me, Tom.
Perhaps not so much in regality, but the physical resemblance might be strong.

A very nice statue, set off by the urban viewpoint.
Ayush Basu: The statue is indeed very well done. Thank you very much, Cherie.

An heroic stance!
