photoblog image The Whip

The Whip

The keen eyes of my photography partner were arrested by the Oriental Whip Snake, the body draped lazily around the leaves and stem. It prefers mostly the forest edge perhaps to facilitate easy sunning itself. The slender body and the startling shade of lime green really appealed to me (well, after my mate pointed it out to me of course!).

I missed it for a second...
Ayush Basu: I missed it a whole long time until my companion pointed out the lazy fella...

Wow! what an amazing capture!!!

smile
Ayush Basu: It sure was one memorable subject, Cheryl. Thank you for that 'wow'!
Cool camouflage. I'm like how fragile the snake's appearance.
Ayush Basu: It does have a sensual feel about its stiking colour and slender appearance

This is wonderful Ayush, you are to be roundly congratulated
Ayush Basu: Very kind of you to say so, Chris. Thank you very much
Cracking picture Ayush. I'm guessing this snake is not venomous??
Ayush Basu: I admit I am not knowledgeable on these matters but the 'net says it is mildly venomous: I suppose that means its bite will not kill humans but will kill smaller prey.
I would have turned around and ran so fast ..... Awesome shot though.
Ayush Basu: I did the same after grabbing a couple of shots; the slender frame and lazy demeanour of this fella helped, Mary
I didn't even notice it at first, it is very well camouflaged isn't it. I would have joined Mary in her hasty retreat.
Ayush Basu: Yes, it had chosen a nice spot, Brian. Normally I have an avoidance of most snakes but the relatively small size and delicate looking appearance enabled me to grab a quick couple of shots before taking to my heels.
Superb Ayush! I would have loved shooting it.
Ayush Basu: Thank you, Richard. I know, there is something highly appealing about this creature.
nice clarity. composition 101 for these type of animals!!
Ayush Basu: Thank you for that comment, Rob.

This is wonderful Ayush
Ayush Basu: I am pleased you think so, Roland
It's not easy to spot one!
Ayush Basu: Oh yes, I would not have noticed it if not for my companion
Terrific capture, Ayush!
Ayush Basu: Thank you very much, Tom

The camouflage is brilliant, Ayush...very fine capture.
Ayush Basu: Thank you for the approval, Ray. Very effective camouflage indeed
That is nicely done.
Ayush Basu: Thank you Michael!
Oh he's gorgeous!!! Love this shot, Ayush - well done!
Ayush Basu: He was rather appealing, Elizabeth. Thank you
wow he's beautiful.... i used to love snakes when i was a little girl.... looking at this picture, i guess i still have a bit of that in me smile
Ayush Basu: Normally I would like to have nothing to do with them but on this case I am charmed by him, Elaine smile

Wow from me too, it is amazing and easy to not see. What a wonderful radiant green colours. Is this one deadly?
Ayush Basu: The internet says it is 'mildly' venomous; I take it that a bite should not be fatal to humans. I did not wish to verify it personally, Astrid. Thank you for the 'wow'.
I routinely meet photographers who have really trained their eyes to pick up minute details and I have to admit this is something I am still working on.
It would have scared the bejesus out of me, Ayush, though I hate to say it. Great image regardless.
Ayush Basu: It did scare me too, but it was not a sizable specimen and seemed to be very calm and lazy, Ginnie. Thank you for your approval.

He has the perfect camouflage system so not surprising you missed him a first.
Ayush Basu: And he was being very still and silent too, Mike.

I didn't see the snake until I read your description, Ayush. What a great shot. Is it a poisonous snake?
Ayush Basu: The internet says it is 'mildly' venomous; I take it that a bite should not be fatal to humans. Thank you, Pauline.

Shucks, you can miss this one easily. Great close-up. We also have a whipsnake here in SA. Grey and living on ground level. Extremely fast and most of the time you just see a blur of movement.
Ayush Basu: I did! My companion on the other hand, has great eyes for such moments. What I could gather on the internet, this is an adult. Juveniles are more yellowish in colour.
oh my... this is amazing Ayush
Ayush Basu: very kind of you to say so, Ronky

Fabulous shot Ayush. I presume this snake is not poisonous?
Ayush Basu: Thank you. According to the internet, it is mildly venomous, so I take it a bite should not be fatal to humans. This fella was very calm and had a lazy demeanour, Chad

Hah.. I first saw what i thought was a mother leaf with a hole in it at first glance. Is this thing poisonous? Well captured.
Ayush Basu: Thank you, Alan. According to the internet, it is mildly venomous, so I take it a bite should not be fatal to humans. This fella was very calm and had a lazy demeanour.

It even mimics the curve of the leaf
Ayush Basu: You are right about that, Lisl. Actually the rest of his body was draped around a stem, so what you said does seem to make sense. Perhaps a conscious effort to blend in?
i thought that the eye was just another whole in a leaf... then i looked closer... he sure blends in to its surroundings Ayush...
great capture... thank your friend for me....petersmile
