Cold Storage

These are some of the processing facilities of all the distributors and vendors. At the back is a walk in freezer, where I did get to walk in. Hence the "vignette filter" in the next shot.

Really liking the low-tech nature of the operation, Ayush.

Also...looks like a Chinese style "altar" in the work area...niiiiiice!
Ayush Basu: Quite a fair bit of material handling is manual and I would assume the manpower is mostly from Malaysia and China. Those altars are very common, Ray. Any commercial enterprise (hawker centers, machine workshops, etc) will have a prominent shrine. That is declining with the likes of retail shops and malls.

Great shots. I hope that they know where to find everything...
Love the B&W
Ayush Basu: Good concern that you have, Astrid. With this being a money making enterprise, I am sure they do. And if they don't then there are going to be many pi**ed off customers island-wide grin
Thank you Astrid, the fogging up of the lens was a known but completely overlooked result of the walking into the freezer.
I like that the work is still done in a traditional way Ayush! Great captures.

A hive of industry Ayush
Ayush Basu: Very well expressed, Chris!

hehe what do you mean? did your lens fog up?
Ayush Basu: Yes... after I came out from the walk in freezer grin
Great stuff Ayush. Getting to see "behind the scenes"
Ayush Basu: Thank you. I was invited as part of a group to attend a brief talk and walk-about, Bill
You have a friend with you or you are photographing yourself waking into the cold room. I like the bit of confusion.
Ayush Basu: That was another member of our group, Mary.
Thank you.

I expect the seen is failrly similar in the UK with out prepared vegetables.
Ayush Basu: I suppose such parallels are being played at many places. I wonder how many consumers are actually interested in seeing the behind-scenes, and if they are, would they actually find it revolting?

I thought that looked like you, Ayush - in yellow with the camera?
Ayush Basu: No, that would be another one of the group and he is at the entrance to the walk in freezer, Lisl
It's all a bit here and there isn't it, i wonder they ever find anything.
Ayush Basu: It does look messy, Brian. Imagine what this would have looked thirty~fifty years ago!
Good shots of some of the background activity Ayush
Ayush Basu: Thank you. I was invited as part of a group to attend a brief talk and walk-about, Janet
I'll bet it was cold in that freezer!
Ayush Basu: Oh yes, we were all a bit warm from the walk and within five minutes, we were sniffling, Tom!
Kangkong at last!
Ayush Basu: Haha, enjoy feasting your eyes, LC
Very nice. I love that second shot.
Ayush Basu: I thought you would. I noticed you have a preference for black and white/selective coloured images, Michael.
The "natural" vignetting works quite well! Wonderful images, Ayush - what a great place!
Ayush Basu: Thank you very much. It was an eye opening visit for me, Elizabeth
I see you weren't the only photographer there.
Ayush Basu: Oh there were quite a few of us, getting in the way and generally being a nuisance, Michael smile
It looks like they've got their act put together, Ayush.
Ayush Basu: After the 2003 SARS episode, a lot of structural overhaul took place, but still some basic (common sense really) precautions are needed. It was an eye opening visit for me, Ginnie

I am a big fan of the B&W - you should try more.
Ayush Basu: I've noticed that Mike, thank you for the visit and encouraging comment. I will certainly try more and look forward to feedback.

Don't let health and hygiene know about this place they will have a field day.
Ayush Basu: I wonder what would be the effect on other consumers and customers if they got a peek at this, Pedro. smile
Looks like another photographer in the background... good colors on this shot...
Ayush Basu: Oh there were quite a few of us, getting in the way and generally being a nuisance, Larry
i like the vignette in the B&W image Ayush... it makes it look like even colder place....petersmile
Ayush Basu: Now that you put it that way, it does appear so. Thank you very much for the comment, Peter

Very similar to a smaller fridge at my greengrocer where they prepare veggies for sales. I like the 'people at work' pictures.
Ayush Basu: This was an eye opening visit for me. Thank you very much for the comment, Louis
Wonderful image
Love this feel of daily life in the market.
