photoblog image Routine

Routine

A first time visitor to the market may feel out of place, especially those who have grown accustomed to the airconditioned malls and glitzy hotels. Wholesalers and retailers haggle over price, tattooed stevedores (some of them with a cigarette dangling from their lips) load/unload crates and the occasional individual buyers eye the fresh produce.

This "uncle" was quite at ease sorting and peeling cabbage, chatting with his buddies hanging off frame, while his hands mechanically went on doing the work.

He looks as if he is considering giving the lettuce a karate chop. Oh, the market scene you have described, is universal.
Ayush Basu: If so, that is not the first time he contemplated doing that. And I completely agree with you
I think markets are similar around the world and I love them. I look forward to a visit with you.
Ayush Basu: I get apprehensive of street/people/candid photography and this was refreshingly better for me, Mary
An interesting 'welcome to the real world' shot. Many think everything almost grows in a plastic pre pack.
Ayush Basu: It is an interesting observation you raise Martin, and I have to concur!
A superb documentary shot Ayush.
Ayush Basu: Thank you very much, Brian. He did have a certain appeal about him which made me go for this shot.

He's probably the Cabbage King of Thailand, Ray! smile
Ayush Basu: He's a champ, Tom!
Sorry, Ayush - scenes like this make me think of Ray!
Ayush Basu: No worries Tom, perfectly natural smile
I miss pasar pagi, pasar malam smile
Ayush Basu: Yeah I like those places too, LC

I think he knows what he is doing.
Impressive tattoos, too bad we don't see more of them.
Ayush Basu: He looks like one who has had some experiences and could spin some interesting tales while his hands are occupied, Astrid.
Needs more glitz... smile
Ayush Basu: Wait till you see his shades, Larry grin

A lovely scene, there is so much detail to be seen in this image.
Ayush Basu: Actually there is! The lighting was somewhat challenging here but there surely was a lot going on here, CP. Thank you for the wonderful comment.
He may be dressed differently Ayush but he trims lettuce the same way that i did at a local supermarket when i was 17 years old ....petersmile
Ayush Basu: I can imagine you;re right, Peter. He did have a certain appeal about him which made me go for this shot.

Ayush Basu: Oh well it is not overpowering, but yeah I did notice that on some of them grin Thank you Elaine!

I prefer markets to malls any day and have eaten chicken curry in an indoor market in Singapore - probably still have a photo somewhere.

I seem to be blocked out of my account so I cannot reply to comments or add new photos so bear with until help arrives ;o)
Ayush Basu: So you are one of the few of SC who have been to the far East then smile. I am with you Mike, I find all the malls are pretty much the same and have virtually no distinguishing feature
