The Sanction

To say that graffiti is a sensitive subject would be an understatement. The only ones tolerated here are the those by graffiti artists that seek prior consent of... well I am not sure who, but some powers, and perform on designated spots.

In 1994, an American citizen Michael P. Fay was penalized for vandalizing cars using spray paint and provoked much controversy. In 2010, a Swiss national, Oliver Fricker, pleaded guilty to charges of trespassing into a SMRT depot and spray-painting a train.

This will be the last post in this series and I thank all visitors who have shared their views on this subject.

Perhaps the leaders are image-conscious to a fault...
Ayush Basu: I suppose it is a bit of a fear of setting a precedent, probably fearful that if they were a little lenient, that might encourage others to try and push the boundaries.

I come down on the side of the artists, so long as they are not willfully damaging property.
Ayush Basu: A very sensible view, Ray and I share the same.
This is a fine example. I am not sure I am very keen on spray painting people's cars without their consent!
Ayush Basu: Unless one wanted to be captured on one of the zillions of CCTVs in Singapore and subsequently get hauled to court, Bill!

This is wonderful and no vandalism. Ray makes a point.
Thanks for making this series. very colourful and very educational.
Ayush Basu: I agree with you (and Ray).
It was my pleasure in making this series, Astrid, seems that even now there are nooks and crannies in this city state that I am discovering, or perhaps places that I knew from a long time ago and have received a face lift in recent times.
I am supporting the artists Ayush! I enjoyed your series.
Ayush Basu: I am supporting the ones who did these (they obviously went through the proper channels), Richard.

Bright & slightly oriental isn't it Ayush
Ayush Basu: Definitely lights up this narrow alley, Chris. Thank you.
This is very Maya to me. smile
Ayush Basu: Next time you're in town, you should check this out, LC

I don't agree with vandalising trains or cars at all; in fact vandalising anyone's property. However, if it is done with permission then that is a different matter. This is ver ybold and striking.
Ayush Basu: This is an example of a concerted effort from several involved parties, Alan. Thank you.

A good series Ayush - it is a tricky subject. When done well it looks great, but insensitive random tagging drives me mad!
Ayush Basu: Thank you very much. And I agree with you totally.
This one is fantastic. I love how the table is included and painted to match.
Ayush Basu: This is an example of a concerted effort from several involved parties, Mary. Thank you.
As I've said before I am not a fan of graffiti but must admit some you have shown is excellent.
Ayush Basu: Some of them do brighten up the narrow back alleys and increase the tourist potential, Brian.

I like this very much, and am now going to look back at your previous pictures and the comments, Ayush
Ayush Basu: Thank you for looking back in Lisl.

i should paint my car smile nice shot!
Ayush Basu: Now that's a thought grin thanks, Elaine
In its right place, this kind of art deserves awards, IMHO, Ayush. This particular series has been a fine examplke of what can be done through proper channels. The colors alone are fantastic!
Ayush Basu: I agree with every thing you had to say, Ginnie.
Pow - good stuff! Take a look at this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XU3yKBs-00Y
Ayush Basu: Wow, that was so cool, Tom. Thank you for pointing that to me
