The Legend of the White Snake

Madame White Snake, as per a Chinese legend, was a human/ white snake who fell in love with the scholar, Xu Xian. The couple had a child. However, the marital bliss was not tolerated by others, especially when the serpent background came to light. At first the scholar-husband was locked up. His wife launched a rescue effort which was successful but came at a great human cost. White Snake was imprisoned subsequently. Their son always paid respects to her and his filial piety led to the release of his mother from the pagoda. This legend has been the source of a number of major Chinese operas, films and television series.

The above is a sene from the battle during the release of the scholar, Xu Xian.

Ayush Basu: Oh yes, fully clothed monkeys taking photos and now this!
I'm surprised Disney hasn't made a sanitized cartoon version of the story Ayush
Ayush Basu: After the shark fin debacle in HK, perhaps they steered clear of this opportunity! grin

Very interesting myth and no surprise it has had such a cultural impact.

Did you have to push the monkeys out of the way to take the photo? :o)
Ha ha... This place can be a bit graphic for little kids! I remember it so well! Man, I haven't been there for so long!
It's not far away from Sentosa, right?

Back then, the bridge linking the main island to Sentosa was not built yet.
Good feeling to being in the action
An all-happening story!
Fascinating story isn't it, you wonder how they first originated.
That is a gorgeous diorama.
