Painted Lady

Or vanessa Cardui. Took me a while to dig up on the 'net, but this is what appears to be the closest match. I am fascinated by butterflies but do not know the first thing when it comes to classification.

Not a vanessa cardui - way too many differences (I looked it up). My first google search was for orange coloured butterfly in asia and I was able to identify it in this book, http://www.torontozoo.com/pdfs/Butterflies-of-the-Malayan-Woods.pdf , which gave me the name and then back to a wiki page so that you can check http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cethosia_cyane

I agree that to identify insects from a picture like this, is difficult. There are very, very many insects out there and many butterflies. With photography came my interest to know what I have shot. So I learnt what makes it easy to identify. In the case of the butterfly the main colour and the area of our globe helps a lot with google searches, like it did in this case.

The problem is when you get hold of one that hasn't been pictured before, or even worse; a wrong label.
Ayush Basu: I stand corrected then Louis and thank you for that link. Appreciate your time and effort in this. I have much to learn when it comes to these things.
Brilliant shot Ayush, I love the patterns of this specimen!
