Having somewhat limited time on my hands in Guangzhou, I took to strolling around, quite aimlessly, around my accommodation. On my very first night there, I quickly learned the lessons that auto traffic is not to be trifled with. For pedestrians wishing to cross the roads, designated crossings or overhead bridges [such as this one] are the best bets. Jaywalking is not an option.
However, these overhead bridges are quite well designed. They have a gentle gradient, the steps are cut at reasonable heights and the middle of the steps makes a ramp for rolling down trolleys, etc. Furthermore, they are well illuminated and have some vegetation, so it is somewhat aesthetically pleasing.
