Of the army of the Gods.
Karthik is depicted here with a bow and arrow but maybe shown with weapons as well. There was once a demon called Taraka, defeating the gods soundly. Taraka, believing that Shiva would never have an heir [being an ascetic], declared that only a son of Shiva may slay him. The Gods conspired to get Shiva married to Parvati [Durga is another form of Parvati]. The result of this union was Karthik or Karthikeya. It is said that he was initially born as six children, who later combined to form Karthik, with six faces. He defeated the demon Taraka and is regarded as the Lord of Warfare.
