Taken during a recent walk through Mac Ritchie Reservoir in Singapore. It is one of the last remaining tracts of tropical rain forests within Singapore and indeed, any other city in the world. Or at least not that I am aware of.
Normally when mature, tall trees block out the sunlight, there is not a lot of growth below and there is some competition among saplings to gain nutrients such as sunlight and water from the soil. Once a tree falls, there is then a sudden spurt in the growth of these saplings.
