Chedi of Chiang Man

Wat Chiang Man was the first temple of Chiang Mai, built in 1297, by King Mengrai, during the construction of his new capital city Chiang Mai. Seen here is the 'Elephant Chedi' within the temple complex. The square base supports a second level which has the front half of life-sized brick-and-stucco elephants. Sadly, by the time we reached here in the evening, the temples themselves were closed. However, the kind priest/monk gladly let us wander around on the premises, taking pictures and admiring the serenity of the place.


If you see the base of the elephant, close to the trunk, there are 3 miniature idols. I do not know their purpose or why they were left there. Conjectures?

Study in blue.

I have seen that the old Greeks arranged little statues in the fire place as offering to the gods. The Greek idea of an offering was to have a statue made and then dedicate it to a god. All Greeks couldn't afford the big statues, so some used small statues in the fire place.

I love the Elephant which must have taken some very skilled craftsmen to make.

Very impressive! What a tremendous piece of work by the architect. I wonder if the idols may be left as some sort of good luck charms?

I like the low angle looking up. It makes the elephant look really impressive.
Thai temples are astonishingly beautiful in their construction, Ayush. This section is particularly noteworthy. Nicely shot from this angle.
