Flat roofs are uncommon in Chinese architecture while gabled roofs are omnipresent owing to the Buddhist belief that they helped ward off evil spirits. The intricate designs on the roof have elaborate, bright colors and eye-popping designs. There are avenues of lions, mythical animals, officials and guardians carved from marble, standing guard and offering their protection from evil spirits and sometimes just for decoration. There are some down sides to having all of these decorations of the roof: the tremendous weight could bring down the entire ceiling, which is why additional colonnades to support the weight were sometimes added under the outer edges.
This image was taken at the Bright Hill Temple, aka as Kong Meng San Phor Kark See Monastery, a name that I absolutely cannot retain in my memory.
