I have read and heard a lot about the romantic canals of Venice. But to me, during my perambulation, the canals presented not only beautiful and preserved sights but also a grittier side: instances of decaying architecture, cats napping and trash barges on the canal. Not just a tourist place, a living, breathing city.

I think the living side is just as interesting as the romantic tourist side. Love the shot here, especially the left hand side - beautiful light and reflections!

A great shot; looks good without the usual tourists in view! The grittier side is common to all our great cities, I'm afraid.

A living breathing and decaying city, but so beautiful. If you get a chance get hold of venetian Francesco da Mosto's 'Francesco's Venice', the BBC DVD series. The history is also fascinating.

Venice itself is a city to must see.Canals, Gondola, architecture etc are quite romantic. In most movies , director makes the best use of it. But here narrow canals, building architecture, reflection on water all together created a very different mood of this shot. Very powerful and thoughtful brilliant shot.
I love on how calm the water is, and the lights reflecting in the water. I wouldn't mind at all having a boat stroll ! Excellent capture. Ayush
