Built in 1887, this so-called grand Old Lady of the East standing at 1 Beach Road, is one the world's remaining 19th century hotels. The hotel is and has been a favourite retreat of writers, political guests of the republic, musicians and movie stars. Elizabeth Taylor, Somerset Maugham, Rudyard Kipling, Michael Jackson and Charlie Chaplin were among its guests. Even the bosses of local beer giant Tiger Breweries (representatives from Heineken and F&N), reputedly met here and to thrash out their plans for the way ahead. Raffles Hotel does have one piece of dubious trivia; apparently, the last wild tiger on mainland Singapore was shot dead in this very hotel.
