photoblog image The Four Chopsticks

The Four Chopsticks

Taken with a wide angle lens (hence the leaning tower effect on the right) from across the street, this is the Civilian War Memorial in the centre. Just like the two columns reaching up to each other at the top, there are two more columns behind. Affectionately called the four chopsticks monument, these four columns represent the Chinese, Malay, Indian and Eurasian civilians (this encompasses all ethnicities in Singapore) who lost their lives during the three years of Japanese occupation (1942-45). Even the inscriptions at this monument are in the four official languages (English, Mandarin, Malay and Tamil). Somehow the sombre mood of the place went well with the dark thunderclouds looming in the background.

The apparently leaning building on the right is Swissôtel The Stamford, at one point, the tallest hotel building.

I like the angle, a bit like it is taken with a fish eye lens
