Kuan Im Teng Temple 1

Standing on Jalan Masjid Kapitan Keling, this temple is also known as the Guanyin Ting Temple or Temple of the Goddess of Mercy. It is one of the oldest standing temples. I noticed that this deity is very popular in this region (Singapore has several temples where the Goddess of Mercy has a commanding presence).

Wow - the ornaments are very impressive!
Ayush Basu: In the centuries past, they were shipped over from China and I expect that even today, for any restoration, skilled workers will be required from China to do a replica, Elizabeth.

You have captured an impressive symmetry here, Ayush.
Ayush Basu: I only had myself to mess up the symmetry, Ray.

The Goddess of Mercy sounds like someone nice to get close to Ayush..
Ayush Basu: And in the centuries ago, sailors freshly landed on Penang shores did something just that, Chris.

Whouah, que c'est beau !
Ayush Basu: It sure is a fine temple, is it not, Martine? Thank you for the comment.
A goddess of mercy deserves a fine temple like this Ayush
Ayush Basu: I expect it would look much more appealing with some renovation and restoration, Bill.
In China and Japan too smile
The camera, Canon, was named after Guanyin - in Japanese way.
Ayush Basu: Oh is it? That was new to me, LC.
The roof itself is stunning, then the decoration makes it outstanding.
Ayush Basu: This is one of the most important places of Penang to visit, not for a religious reason, but to get a historical and cultural perspective on Penang, Mary.
Terrific shot Ayush, I enjoy symmetrical pictures like this.
Ayush Basu: I like symmetry too, Brian. This was a joy to photograph.

This is amazing and love the symmetry in this picture. Look at those fabulous decorations. Looks very well looked after.
Ayush Basu: It really is a stunning bit of architecture, Astrid. Thank you for your enthusiastic comment.
That is nice. So ornate.
Ayush Basu: It is widely visited by tourists and locals alike, Michael.
Mam, I hope I can get a happy meal.
Ayush Basu: smile
The Goddess of Mercy NEEDS to have a commanding presence these days, Ayush. I'd love to learn more about her.
Ayush Basu: I will have a few more short posts about this temple, Ginnie. And yes, I imagine she is very relevant till date.

It looks as if those dragons on top is doing some comic dance routine.
Ayush Basu: Most of the characters on the roof are depictions of mythological events or are said to be guardians and protectors of some sort. I guess the dragons exude some kind of strong, protective element.

Mercy is a good thing to find... it's a beautiful temple too... nice shot and thanks for the wee bit of education on it.
Ayush Basu: Thank you, Elaine for following these shots from Penang and this part of the world. And the education I get from the comfort of my chair here is what attracts me to photo blogging.
Amazing decoration!
Ayush Basu: It does make heads turn, I can assure you that, Tom.
this is very impressive details of the structure and its lavish decor Ayush... i like your point of view....petersmile
Ayush Basu: Thank you very much Peter, I am pleased I could show some different aspects when compared to a built up city like Singapore.

I like the ornate detailing.
Ayush Basu: I like it too, CP. And there are many more like this in Penang.
