This monument is dedicated to the 24,000 allied servicemen and women from United Kingdom, Sri Lanka, India, Malaysia, Australia, Canada, the Netherlands and New Zealand who died defending Singapore and Malaysia (then Malaya) against the invading Japanese forces during World War II. Some 4000 graves are to be seen, many nameless. Others are commemorated on the walls of the monument. Many of the martyrs were barely out of their teens. The graves are on the gradual slope and today, from the top, the skyline of Singapore as well as nearby Johor Bahru in Malaysia can be easily seen.
Additionally Yusof Ishak, the first President of Singapore and Benjamin Sheares, the second President of Singapore are buried here. Clouds were rolling in rapidly by the time I was done with my visit. I purposefully adopted a low horizon and included more of the skies and clouds.
